What’s all the fuss about?

The fuss is all about your safety, of course. So, whether you like it or not, going ATGATT (All The Gear, All The Time) is by far the best option when rolling out. However, the quality of your clothing kit is just as important to ensure maximum protection on the road. Aware of this, the European Union ruled in 2018 that all protective motorcycle clothing on the market must comply with the EU Personal Protective Equipment (PPE) regulation and its further standards, such as EN-17092. Since that decision, riding gear must meet the EU safety, health, and environmental protection requirements. Or, in other words, it must be CE approved.

Getting the CE-rtificate

To achieve a CE rating, motorcycle gear must undergo and pass specific tests conducted by an independent third party. These tests include, but are not limited to, impact abrasion resistance, impact absorption, tear strength, seam strength, cut resistance, and more.

Taking safety to the next level.

Under the new EN-17092 standard, CE-approved motorcycle gear is given specific ratings—or classes—ranging from A to AAA, based on the degree of protection from impact and abrasion. Here’s what these letters signify:

Class A

Minimum necessary level of protectionBest comfort and ergonomicsSuitable for urban riding at lower speedsOften found in jeans, light-duty garments, or summer clothing

Class AA

Medium level of protectionMedium comfort and ergonomicsSuitable for touring and street cruisingOften found in leather and textile jackets or pants

Class AAA

Highest level of protectionLimited comfort and ergonomicsSuitable for high-speed and track ridingOften found in one-piece or combi leather racing suits

What about protectors?

Impact armor, such as knee or elbow protectors, must also undergo a series of tests to be CE certified and acquire a specific level of protection.

  • CE Level 1 offers reliable impact protection, with a maximum transmitted force of up to 35 kN.
  • CE Level 2 offers higher protection and impact absorption, limiting the transmitted force to under 20 kN.
